- Run spirit wear as a pre-order, not inventory: collect orders and sizes first, then print exactly what sold
- One- or two-color screen prints at 24+ pieces land around $12-$18 per shirt, leaving $8-$15 of margin at a $25 sale price
- Hoodies are your highest-margin item; tees drive volume; adult sizes outsell youth in most PTA sales
- Order by the end of September for fall sports and homecoming; by mid-October for holiday and winter sports
The Pre-Order Model (Use It)
The single biggest mistake we see PTAs and booster clubs make is guessing at inventory. They order 200 shirts in a size run someone estimated, sell 120, and eat the rest. The fix is simple: run a two-week pre-order with a Google Form or your school's payment platform, collect money and sizes up front, then send us the final count. You print what sold, you never carry stock, and you know your profit before a single shirt exists.
The only cost of this model is patience: parents wait about two to three weeks from order close to delivery. Set that expectation on the order form and nobody minds.
Pricing That Actually Makes Money
At 24 or more pieces, a one- or two-color screen print on a quality tee runs roughly $12-$18 per shirt depending on the blank and the number of print locations. Sell at $25 and the fundraiser clears $8-$13 per shirt. Hoodies cost more to produce but sell for $40-$45 with a bigger margin, and parents buy them happily in October. Our custom shirt pricing guide walks through what moves the per-shirt number if you want to tune it.
Three rules to protect the margin: keep the design to one or two ink colors, print one location (front or back, not both), and hit the quantity break. A big front print in school colors on a quality blank looks great and keeps costs down.
Youth Sports Teams and Leagues
Team orders work a little differently because names and numbers come into play. For a single team of 12-20 players, we'll typically screen print the team logo and use heat transfer vinyl for individual names and numbers, which keeps personalization affordable. Whole leagues (several teams, hundreds of pieces) are pure screen printing and priced accordingly. Coaches and parents get the same design on a hoodie or long sleeve as an add-on, which is where league orders quietly make their money.
Design Tips for Spirit Wear That Sells
- Use the real mascot and colors. Send us whatever files the school has; we'll clean up a low-res logo so it prints sharp. Do check with the school on any logo-use rules before selling.
- Offer two designs max. A classic front logo and one "fun" alternate. More options split the volume and add setup cost.
- Adult sizes outsell youth. Parents, grandparents, and teachers buy spirit wear too. In most PTA sales adult sizes are 60-70% of the order.
- Add one premium item. A hoodie or crewneck at a higher price point raises the average order without adding much complexity.

The Calendar for This School Year
- Now through late September: fall sports, homecoming, and back-to-school spirit sales. Close pre-orders by the end of September to deliver before October events.
- By mid-October: winter sports, holiday concerts, and hoodie sales. Fleece blanks sell out by late October, so hoodie orders need to be in early.
- January-February: spring sports, 8th grade and senior class shirts, field day and end-of-year events.
Charity Runs, Walks, and Events
Turkey trots, 5Ks, and memorial walks follow the same playbook with one twist: sponsor logos on the back. We'll lay out a sponsor block that stays legible at 10-12 logos and fits the shirt. Registration shirts should be ordered two to three weeks before the event with a small overage for day-of sign-ups. Our event and team apparel page covers rush options if the timeline is tight.

We work with schools and teams across Central NJ, including Freehold, Marlboro, Middletown, Wall Township, and Brick. Call (732) 272-1929, quotes are free and there's no minimum on heat transfer.
