- Embroidery is the right decoration for nearly all outerwear: it outlasts prints on nylon, fleece, and softshell
- Match the jacket to the job: insulated or canvas for field crews, softshell or quarter-zip for office and customer-facing staff
- Expect roughly $45-$90+ per decorated jacket depending on the blank; vests and fleece land at the lower end
- Order by early November; popular outerwear sizes and colors sell down fast once temperatures drop
Why Outerwear Is Worth Branding
From November to March, the jacket is the uniform. Your crew's branded tees disappear under whatever coat they grabbed that morning, and so does your logo. A branded jacket keeps the business visible on job sites, at supply houses, and in every driveway all winter, and it reads as a real investment in the people wearing it. For a lot of New Jersey contractors, landscapers, and service businesses, outerwear is the most-worn piece of apparel they buy all year.
Match the Jacket to the Job
- Field crews (roofing, landscaping, HVAC, construction): insulated work jackets, canvas or duck jackets, and heavyweight hoodies. Durability and warmth matter more than looks. Dark colors hide dirt.
- Customer-facing staff (estimators, office, sales): softshell jackets and quarter-zips. They look sharp over a polo, layer well, and don't scream "work site."
- Layering pieces for everyone: fleece jackets and puffer or softshell vests. Vests are a favorite for crews that run hot while working and for staff who want freedom of movement.
Most businesses end up with two styles: something rugged for the field and something cleaner for the office. One logo, two jackets, one order.
How Outerwear Gets Decorated
Embroidery is the standard for jackets, and for good reason. Thread holds up on nylon, polyester shells, fleece, and canvas far better than ink, and it looks premium. A left-chest logo is the default; a larger back logo works on canvas and fleece, and a sleeve or back-yoke hit with a website or phone number is a cheap add-on. We cover the tradeoffs in detail in Embroidery vs Screen Printing.
Screen printing works on cotton-blend hoodies and some canvas, but many technical jacket fabrics have water-repellent coatings that ink won't bond to reliably. Heat transfer is an option for a large back graphic on certain shells and for one-off additions. When you send a jacket style, we'll tell you which method fits that specific fabric before anything is produced.
One practical note: embroidery on a jacket can't go through the lining easily on some insulated styles, so placement options vary by garment. That's normal, and it's sorted out at the mockup stage.
What It Costs
Decorated outerwear typically runs $45-$90+ per piece, depending mostly on the jacket itself. Fleece and vests land at the lower end, softshells in the middle, and insulated or canvas work jackets at the top. Embroidery adds a one-time digitizing setup for a new logo that's reused on every future order. Pricing improves at 12 and 24 pieces. If you're outfitting a crew for the first time, our company uniform program guide covers how to budget per employee across the year.
Sizing Outerwear Without Regret
Jackets run differently than tees, and people wear them over layers. Two rules prevent most returns: order based on each person's actual jacket size, not their t-shirt size, and when in doubt size up for anyone working outside. If you can, ask your crew to try on a sample size before you place the full order. We can source a size run for that.
When to Order
Outerwear demand spikes the first cold week of the season, and popular jackets in common colors and sizes sell down quickly after that. Production takes about 7-10 business days from mockup approval. Ordering by early November gets jackets on your crew before the real cold and keeps your color and size choices open. Pair the order with hats and beanies and you've covered winter; see our custom hats and beanies guide. If jackets are going out as year-end gifts, the timeline in holiday gifts for clients and staff applies.
